Equitable Development Strategy
The City, in partnership with community stakeholders and the Austin Economic Development Corporation, is crafting an Equitable Development Strategy that will identify discrete recommendations to help ensure that these new public spaces are indeed creating benefits for existing residents as well as welcoming displaced residents back to the neighborhood.
Equitable Development Strategy recommendations will be adopted by the Austin City Council upon completion and may include programming recommendations for new caps and policy/programmatic recommendations to help stabilize surrounding neighborhoods.
The in-progress strategy identifies six key areas of focus, informed by public outreach. These include:
Enhance Workforce Development Connections
Integrate Art, Music, and Performance into Local Economic Development
Rethink the Future of Retail with Vibrant Legacy and Entrepreneurial Business Corridors
Align Housing Demand with Sites for Growth
Create Distinctive Open Space and Development Cluster Sub districts that Yield Higher Park Premium
Enhance Community Capacity Building for Equitable Development
The Strategy’s recommendations for on-cap programming are included in the Our Future 35 Vision Plan, which will guide the project development process for all caps, including design. This strategy will focus specifically on community needs regarding housing, anti-displacement, community development, small business support and incubation, and workforce development.
This effort will entail working closely with community stakeholders and implementers already at the table via stakeholder working groups and the Our Future 35 Community Steering Committee.
